The history of Meals on Wheels in the Chapel Hill area goes back to 1974. At that time, members of the congregation of Chapel of the Cross saw a need for improved food and nutrition services for seniors. As a result, it was determined that a program of home delivered meals was needed. At least 75 potential senior recipients were identified. Several local churches decided to join the effort including University Methodist Church, St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and the United Church of Chapel Hill. Those leading the organization decided that meals would be delivered to all who qualified on the basis of physical need, regardless of age or the ability to pay.

Through the cooperative effort of the churches, volunteers and businesses in the local community, Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels began delivery of meals in October of 1976. The constitution and By-Laws were approved and the articles of incorporation signed. Binkley Baptist Church offered free office space and an area for distribution of meals. Food was prepared by UNC Hospitals, the Carolina Inn, and volunteer drivers were recruited from the community. It was through broad-based community support, both financially and with volunteer help that the organization survived and thrived.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels group was initiated as a nutritional program, helping to provide local, home-bound seniors with a much needed service. However, it has surprisingly been very instrumental in providing a much needed outside contact for those who are shut in. Although it was unintended, the results have been dramatic. Our volunteers are often the only human contact many of our recipients have on a daily basis. This gives the recipients and their families the security of knowing someone will be checking in and ready to respond if any problems arise. In fact, through our volunteer’s daily visits, there have been occasions when problems have been identified and reported. In some cases, these events have helped in saving a life. Participation in Meals on Wheels is a vital part of maintaining independent living.

Now in its 34th year, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels currently serves over 86 meals every day. With over 100 dedicated volunteers, we have a group of people who are passionate about helping the community. With funding through the United Way, we have a strong financial partner, committed to helping our organization grow. Although directors, food service providers and volunteers have changed over the years, our commitment to compassionate service has remained the same.

We look forward to working with you!
